Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of nursing employment capability reinforcement program on the career maturity, self-esteem, perceived career barriers and career decision?making self-efficacy of nursing students.

Methods : This study was pre-experimental research designed to compare the differences between pre-and post-program. The subjects in this study were 86 selected students at a university located in B Metropolitan City. The nursing employment capability reinforcement program was given August, 17th, 2016. The program consisted of two steps in total. The participants completed a battery of paper-and-pencil measures, including the career maturity, self-esteem, perceived career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy scale before and after the program. The collected data was analyzed using t-test, x2-test, Fisher¡¯s exact test with the SPSS WIN 18.0 program.

Results : The findings of the study are summarized as follows: Mean value for career maturity was from 3.23 to 3.27(t=.500, p=.619), self-esteem was from 3.48 to 3.54(t=.714, p=.477), perceived career barriers was from 3.12 to 2.82(t=-5.081, p<.001) and career decision-making self-efficacy from score 4.38 to 4.61(t=3.312, p<.001).

Conclusion : Nursing employment capability reinforcement program was an effective program on career maturity, self-esteem, perceived career barriers and career decision?making self- efficacy of nursing students.
